For more than twenty years, Yazan Orabi has painted people — not as they appear, but as they are beneath what they choose to show.
His works often begin with an encounter: a conversation, a gesture, something said, and more often something left unsaid. Orabi absorbs the moment and lets it return through figures, faces, bodies, colour and abstraction.
A conversation may become a posture. A hesitation may become a shadow.
His canvases are crowded with presence — the gaze, desire, memory, distance — figures caught between revealing themselves and retreating again.
Born in Syria and shaped by life across the Gulf and the West, Orabi works from a place that resists a single cultural reading. These worlds coexist in the work, as they do within people themselves.
His paintings do not illustrate identity. They complicate it.
Orabi accepts a limited number of personal commissions each year. They are not portraits in the conventional sense. Each begins with conversations in which personality, memory and contradiction gradually reveal themselves — and becomes a painting that holds what was never quite said.
